Trade Targets - Infielders

Here are profiles of three infielders the Angels should be inquiring about as the trade deadline nears. Yesterday, I profiled three outfielders the Angels should look to get.

Mark Teixeira
Rangers - 1B - 27 years old

Contract Situation: Teixeira is making $9.4 million this season. He does not have a contract for next year, but is also not eligible for free agency until after the 2008 season.

Statistics:
Year   Games   HR  RBI   AVG    OPS
2006     162   33  110  .282   .886
2007      75   13   49  .299   .939
Career   690  153  499  .284   .902

Analysis: Teixeira would be a great addition even though he would come at a steep price - Casey Kotchman plus a starting pitcher (Ervin Santana or Joe Saunders) and an outfielder (Reggie Willits or Terry Evans). The big question is would Texas trade Teixeira to a division rival?

Fitting In: Vladimir Guerrero and Mark Teixeira would look great in the batting order.

Paul Konerko
White Sox - 1B - 31 years old

Contract Situation: Konerko is in the middle of a 5-year $60 million contract which lasts through 2010.

Statistics:
Year   Games   HR  RBI   AVG    OPS
2006     152   35  113  .313   .932
2007      99   22   61  .263   .868
Career  1374  267  866  .282   .851

Analysis:The Angels could have had Konerko as a free agent two years ago. Now they would have to ship prospects to get him so I'm not sure they would want to do that. They might do Konerko for Kotchman straight up but that also increases the payroll and limits their flexibility in the off season.

Fitting In:To get Konerko, I would assume that Kotchman would be part of the deal, so Konerko would play first and hit behind Vlad.

Troy Glaus
Blue Jays - 3B - 31 years old

Contract Situation: Glaus is signed through 2008 at $11.25 million per season with a player option for $11.25 million in 2009.

Statistics:
Year   Games   HR  RBI   AVG    OPS
2006     153   38  104  .252   .868
2007      77   15   48  .281   .891
Career  1206  272  764  .255   .862

Analysis:This is a move that many Angels fans would like to see get done. The Angels had their reasons for not re-signing Glaus three years ago and I don't think anything has changed in the minds of Stoneman and Moreno.

Fitting In: Glaus would play 3rd base and hit behind Guerrero. Figgins would be moved to 2nd base temporarily while Kendrick is injured. Figgins would then become the super rover player he was a couple years ago.

I would have loved to include Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera on this list, but I don't think the Marlins are looking to move him yet. He is not eligible for free agency until 2009, however I would give up the farm for him - Brandon Wood, Nick Adenhart and another prospect.
