There is a rumor circulating in the Angels' clubhouse that relievers Scot Shields and Darren Oliver both had a secret surgery during the All-Star Break.
According to the rumor, Shields and Oliver drove to Beverly Hills to visit Dr. 90210 to have their arms exchanged. Arm-replacement surgery isn't Dr. 90210's specialty, he jumped at the chance to help professional baseball players.
It's hard to believe that during the 3-day All-Star break, the players could have the surgery and recover enough so that the Angels' management wouldn't notice.
In fact, nobody noticed until some investigative reporters looked at the pitchers' statistics. Before the All-Star break, Shields had a 1.70 era. After the break it is 8.56. Oliver's era was 5.79 before the break and 1.04 after the break.
I realize, that this seems highly unlikely, but it really is the only logical way to explain the drastic changes in both players performances.
If you look closely in this picture, you might see where Oliver's pitching arm looks like it might have previously belonged to Shields.
