For the last few years, Bill Stoneman has been criticized for not making any trades. Stoneman refused to give up prospects saying that they were the future of the Angels.
Stoneman was right.
Take last night's game as a good example.
Four of the ten starters have less than one year's worth of experience in the Major Leagues. Two others have played less than two complete seasons.
The starting pitcher was Joe Saunders. Last night was career game #28 for him. He's 7-2 with a 3.62 era this year.
The starting catcher was Jeff Mathis. In his 68 career games, he hasn't put up much offense, but defensively he is leaps and bounds better than Mike Napoli or Jose Molina.
The starting 2nd Baseman was Howie Kendrick. He has played in 133 career games and is hitting .368 since his return from a hand injury.
The starting Designated Hitter was Kendry Morales. Morales has played in 83 career games. Since being called up last week, Morales is hitting .480 (12-for-25).
The starting 1st Baseman was Casey Kotchman. Kotchman has played in 227 games and has solidified his place as a gold-glove candidate while hitting .295.
One of the veterans in last night's lineup was Maicer Izturis. He's played in 292 games (less than 2 seasons) and is hitting .413 (31-for-75) with runners in scoring position this year.
Last night wasn't a one time occurrence. In the recent big sweep in Seattle, Mathis, Kendrick, Morales and Izturis played the entire series. Kotchman was banged up so while Morales played 1st base, Reggie Willits (142 career games - another rookie) was the designated hitter.
So what does 4 rookies and 2 second year players get you? A league best 80-54 record.
Next time, Stoneman is bashed for not making a move, remember that sometimes the best move is to not make one at all.
