Maybe I'm getting ahead of things, but the Angels' magic number is 20 with 25 games remaining. The magic number refers to the number of games the Angels must win and the Mariners must lose for the Angels to clinch the AL West.
The Angels are currently 81-56 (.591) and the Mariners are 74-62 (.544). So here are the situations...
If the Angels play .500 the rest of the way (13-12), the Mariners need to go 21-5 in their final 26 to take the AL West.
If the Mariners continue to win at a .544 clip, the Angels only need to go 8-17 to win the division.
The Angels have a 6.5 game lead over Seattle. Things are looking really good, maybe too good.
In 1995, the Angels had a 6.5 game lead on Seattle with 25 to play and we all know what happened that year. (The Angels finished 11-14, the Mariners finished 17-8 and the Halos lost a one game playoff to the Mariners.)
Despite the collapse of 95, the Angels have a 98.94% chance of making the playoffs this year according to Baseball Prospectus.
So get your hopes up as the playoffs near, but remember anything can happen in sports and sometimes it actually does. (UCLA 13, USC 9)
