In the past week, much has been said about the Angels excellent 1st inning production. They have scored runs in the first inning the past five games - all Angel victories.
What hasn't been mentioned in the joyful glow of a Dodgers sweep is the poor hitting the Angels have been doing in the late innings. I suppose you take the good with the bad, and (despite the rallying origins of this website 6 years ago) I would rather see the Angels hit well early in the game.
In innings 1-6, the Angels are 2nd in MLB (behind Detroit) with a .290 batting average. In innings 7-9+, the Angels are 28th in batting with a .229 average. A drop off of 61 points.
It's not just batting average, the Angels have hit 25 home runs in innings 1-6, and only 5 home runs after the 6th inning. The Angels OPS drops from .772 (11th in MLB) to dead last at .594 (30th in MLB).
There are 14 Angels with at least 45 at bats this year, and only one of them has a higher batting average in the late innings - Howie Kendrick.
Here is a breakdown of the top 14 Angels hitters along with MLB and Angel averages.
