Angels Prospect Report from USA Today in 2002

As I was looking for information on Nathan Haynes, I came across an old USA Today article titled "Angels 2002 prospect report."

It was written in April 2002 and includes reports on David Eckstein, Alfredo Amezaga, Nathan Haynes, Casey Kotchman, Francisco Rodriguez, Jared Abruzzo, Elpidio Guzman, Chris Bootcheck, Bobby Jenks and John Lackey.

It's a good read.

Here are some excerpts...

"Hard-throwing righthander Francisco Rodriguez, a 20-year-old with big-time fastball and a nearly limitless ceiling, put up excellent strikeout numbers in the high Class A California League for a second straight season but was also very hittable and still lacks the maturity to move through the system."

"A star first baseman who earned All-American status while leading Grayson County Community College to a national title, the 23-year-old John Lackey was raw when drafted but has blossomed into a steady starter."

Read the article and keep in mind what happened 6 months after the article was written.
