What's a walk?

I realize that the Angels hitters are not known for taking walks.  They never have been.  It's not part of Mike Scioscia's or Mickey Hatcher's offensive philosophy.  But this season there are a few players with incredibly low totals.

Four Angels players (with at least 50 at-bats) have only one walk each.

According to baseball-almanac.com, the record low for a full season (150 games played) is 10 set by Ozzie Guillen in 1996.

Garret Anderson has 1 walk in 95 at-bats.  That leaves him 231 shy of Barry Bonds' single season record of 232 set in 2004.

Howie Kendrick and Robb Quinlan each have 53 at-bats and one walk.

Jose Molina has 1 walk in 59 at-bats. That means that in 2007, you are as likely to see Jose Molina walk (once) as you  will see him steal home (once).

If you thought Shea Hillenbrand hitting a home run was a rarity (he has two), you are right.  But it's no rarer than Hillenbrand taking a walk (also two).

Here are projected walk totals for 5 Angels.  The games and at-bats for GA and Howie look low due to injury.

Player     Games    AB  BB
Hillenbrand  124   479   7
GA            79   327   3
Molina        59   203   3
Howie         52   183   3
Quinlan       69   183   3
