With Bartolo Colon admitting that he is banged up, the Angels need someone to fill Bart's big shoes.
Dustin Moseley, Hector Carrasco and Joe Saunders seem to be the obvious choices.
Scioscia likes having a 7th inning pitcher and with Justin Speier injured, Moseley is currently the guy. Moseley also pitched 2+ innings tonight (Wednesday), so it does not seem that Scioscia is resting him for Saturday.
Carrasco started three games last year for the Angels, but has not pitched well lately. His era has gone from 3.41 last year to 5.86 this year.
That leaves Saunders. Saunders pitched great earlier this year for the Angels. He went 2-0 in 3 starts with a 1.96 era. However, he has struggled in AAA with a 5.06 era. He last pitched on Sunday, so he would be ready for Saturday. Unfortunately, in his last game he was hit hard - 13 hits and 6 earned runs in 5 innings.
Despite his recent struggles, Saunders is my pick. To make room for Saunders, I think the Angels will send Kendry Morales back to Salt Lake. This will also provide Morales with some extra at-bats which he hasn't seen while in the majors.
If Scioscia wants to get crazy, the Angels could call up either Kasey Olenberger or Nick Adenhart.
Olenberger is 6-1 at AAA Salt Lake with a 3.49 era. He is already scheduled to pitch on Saturday, so rest is not a question.
Adenhart is the top arm in the Angels' farm system and is currently at AA Arkansas. After a super hot April (5 starts 3-1, 0.80 era), Adenhart has struggled in May (05 starts, 0-1, 7.13 era). He is scheduled to start Friday night for the Travelers.
